🦀 Geosesarma: Everything You Need to Know About Vampire Crabs
Valerio ChiaradonnaGeosesarma crabs , also known as vampire crabs for their fascinating fluorescent eyes, are becoming increasingly popular among paludarium enthusiasts. But how much do we really know about these exotic little creatures?
In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions we receive from customers and enthusiasts.
How often do Geosesarma molt?
Like all crustaceans, Geosesarma grow through molting. In the first months of life, this process is more frequent (even every two weeks), while in adults, it can occur every four to six weeks. It's important to provide hiding places and a humid environment to facilitate this process.
What is the ideal diet for Geosesarma?
They are opportunistic omnivores. You can feed them live insects (such as fruit flies or small crickets), cooked vegetables (spinach, zucchini), crustacean pellets, and occasionally animal protein such as shrimp or pieces of fish.
What type of habitat is suitable for Geosesarma?
They live in humid, tropical environments. A paludarium with 80% dry land and 20% water is ideal. A well-draining substrate, moss, bark, live plants, and plenty of shelter are required. The temperature should remain between 24°C and 28°C, with high humidity (70-90%).
Can they live with other animals?
Best avoided. Geosesarma are predators and may attack small fish, shrimp, or even other crabs. Coexistence is possible only with other Geosesarma, but with caution.
How can males be distinguished from females?
Males have larger claws and a narrow, pointed abdomen. Females, on the other hand, have a broader, rounder abdomen, useful for carrying eggs.
How do Geosesarma reproduce?
After mating, the female incubates the eggs under her abdomen for about a month. When they hatch, they become fully developed crabs (not larvae). To increase their chances of survival, it's best to separate them from the adults.
What is their life expectancy?
They live on average 2 years , but in good environmental conditions they can even exceed 30 months.
What environmental conditions do they need?
-
Temperature: 24–28°C
-
Humidity: 70–90%
-
PH: slightly acidic or neutral (6.5–7.5)
-
Clean, non-chlorinated water
-
Soft or indirect lighting
-
Dry areas for rest
Can they live completely immersed in water?
No. They are semi-terrestrial . They require dry land where they spend most of their time. If forced to live only in water, they face stress and early death.
Can you keep multiple males together?
From our personal experience, males can be kept together.
