Acanthurids: Who are surgeonfish and why are they so special?

Valerio Chiaradonna

If you've ever seen a brightly colored fish swimming elegantly among the rocks of a coral reef, it was most likely an acanthuridae , also known as a surgeonfish .
They are among the most fascinating marine fish ever, but also among the most misunderstood by those approaching the world of marine aquariums for the first time.

In this article we discover who acanthurids are , where they live, why they are called that and what makes them truly unique animals.

What are Acanthuridae?

Acanthurids belong to the family Acanthuridae and are tropical marine fish that live almost exclusively near coral reefs .

The name “acanthuride” comes from the Greek and means more or less “sharp thorn” , a fundamental detail to understand their particularity.

In fact, all acanthurids have one or more very sharp spines near their tails, which they use for defense. It is precisely for this characteristic that they are commonly called surgeonfish .

Why are they called surgeonfish?

The nickname “surgeonfish” is no coincidence.

At the base of the tail of acanthurids there is a natural blade , similar to a small scalpel.
This plug can be:

  • retractable
  • fixed
  • single or double, depending on the species

In nature it is used only for defense or to establish territory , not for attack.
It is a very effective protection mechanism against predators.

Where they live in nature

Acanthurids inhabit tropical seas , in particular:

  • Indo-Pacific Ocean
  • Red Sea
  • Caribbean

They almost always live near coral reefs , where they find:

  • seaweed to eat
  • shelters among the rocks
  • space to swim

They are very active fish and spend most of the day moving continuously.

What do they eat?

Most acanthurids are herbivorous .

In nature they feed mainly on:

  • filamentous algae
  • algae that grow on rocks and corals

This makes them essential animals for the balance of the coral reef , because they help keep algae growth under control.

Some species supplement their diet with small organisms, but the basis always remains plant-based.

Spectacular colors and shapes

One of the reasons why acanthurids are so loved is their incredible appearance .

There are species:

  • completely yellow
  • electric blue
  • with black stripes
  • with purple or orange reflections

Among the best known species we find:

  • Zebrasoma flavescens (yellow surgeon)
  • Paracanthurus hepatus (the famous “Dory”)
  • Acanthurus leucosternon
  • Naso lituratus

Each species has a slightly different personality and behavior.

Are acanthurids suitable for everyone?

Although very popular, acanthurids are not beginner fish .

The main reasons are:

  • they need a lot of space
  • they suffer easily from stress
  • require very high quality water
  • They can be territorial with other similar fish

In an aquarium, a small acanthurid can grow quite a lot over time, so it should always be thought about with the future in mind .

A fascinating animal to know (and respect)

Acanthurids are not just “beautiful fish”.
They are complex, intelligent animals that play a key role in marine ecosystems.

Knowing them better means:

  • appreciate the biodiversity of the seas
  • understand the importance of coral reefs
  • avoid impulsive and unaware purchases

Whether you're just curious or are thinking about getting into marine aquariums, acanthurids remain a perfect example of how elegant, functional and surprising nature can be.
