How to Set Up the Perfect African Cichlid Tank: A Practical Guide for Aquarists

Valerio Chiaradonna

African cichlids are among the most beloved freshwater fish for their vibrant colors and lively behavior. However, to keep them healthy, it's essential to set up a tank suited to their needs. In this article, you'll discover how to create an ideal habitat, avoiding common mistakes and choosing the right products.

1. What size tank should an African cichlid be?

Cichlids are territorial: they need large spaces to reduce stress and aggression.

  • For cichlids from Lake Malawi or Tanganyika, a tank of at least 200 litres is recommended.
  • Better a long tub than a tall one: favor horizontal space.

2. What furniture should be used to simulate the natural habitat?

African cichlids live among the rocks in African lakes. Decorate it like this:

  • Sandy bottoms or fine gravel
  • Lots of rocks and crevices to create hiding places and territories
  • Avoid wood or decorations that acidify the water

👉 Recommended products: volcanic rocks, African aquarium sand, 3D rock backgrounds (ask us in store or DM for availability).

3. Do you need a powerful filter?

Yes, these fish make a lot of mess. The filter must guarantee:

  • At least 4-5 times the volume of the tank/hour
  • Excellent biological and mechanical filtration

💡 Tip: Combine external filter + water movement to simulate a lake environment.

4. What should the water be like for African cichlids?

The optimal values are:

  • pH between 7.8 and 8.6
  • High KH and GH (hard water)
  • Temperature between 24°C and 28°C

➡️ Use specific salts for African cichlids, easily found in stores (Animal Instinct selects the best brands).

5. Can I put plants in the tank?

Generally, no: cichlids dig up and uproot plants. If you want to try:

  • Use resistant plants such as Anubias, Microsorum or Vallisneria
  • Anchor them to rocks or wood

6. How many cichlids can I keep together?

Better to include a large group , not just a few specimens:

  • This is how aggression is dispersed
  • Male to female ratio: 1 male for every 2-3 females

7. How to feed them properly?

It depends on the species (Mbuna, Peacock, etc.), but in general:

  • Varied diet: granules, spirulina, plant-based foods
  • Avoid foods that are too high in protein for herbivores
