Valerio Chiaradonna

The leopard gecko ( Eublepharis macularius ) is one of the most popular reptiles among enthusiasts and beginners. Docile, charming, and relatively easy to care for, it's one of the best choices if you're looking to explore the world of exotic animals.

In this article, you'll find everything you need to know: from habitat to diet, to frequently asked questions from our customers.

🧬 Who is the Leopard Gecko?

Native to the arid regions of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and India , the leopard gecko lives in rocky and sandy environments. It is a nocturnal, terrestrial reptile and particularly long-lived: it can live 15 to 20 years if cared for properly.

Unlike many other geckos, it has movable eyelids and can close its eyes. As adults, it can reach 20-25 cm and presents a wide variety of colorations (morphologies), the result of genetic selection.

🏠 Ideal Habitat: What Should the Terrarium Be Like?

To ensure a healthy life for your gecko, habitat is essential.
Here's what you shouldn't miss:

✅ Minimum dimensions

60x40x40 cm for a single specimen

Better if made of glass or PVC with good ventilation

✅ Temperature and heating

Warm zone: 30-32°C (with heating mat or spot)

Cold zone: 24-26°C

At night it can drop to 20-22°C

Use a thermostat to avoid sudden changes

✅ Recommended substrate

NO fine sand (risk of intestinal obstruction)

Better: absorbent paper, rubber mats or specific substrates for reptiles

✅ Essential furnishings

At least 2 dens : one warm and one cold

A humid den with moss or coconut fiber to facilitate molting

Bowls for water, calcium and insects

🍽️ What Does the Leopard Gecko Eat?

The gecko is insectivorous , so it needs live insects .
Among the most common:

Crickets

Mealworms (moderation)

Cockroaches

Locusts

👉 Supplementation

Calcium at every meal

Multivitamin 1-2 times a week

Power frequency

Young people: every day

Fleshy tail

Intact skin

Regular appetite

Terrarium hygiene:

Remove droppings every day
