Common Aquarium Fish Diseases and How to Treat Them

Keeping fish healthy means not only providing them with quality food, but also recognizing the signs of illness early. In this guide, we look at the most common diseases in home aquariums, the symptoms to watch for, and possible remedies.

1. Ichthyosis (white dots)

Symptoms: Small white spots resembling grains of salt appear on the body and fins; the fish rubs itself against furniture; and it breathes rapidly.

Causes: protozoan parasite Ichthyophthirius multifiliis , favored by changes in temperature or stress.

Care: Gradually increase the water temperature by 2-3°C (if compatible with the species); use specific anti-ichthium products; turn off the lights to reduce stress.

2. Mycosis (fungal infections)

Symptoms: White or gray, cotton-ball-shaped spots, loss of appetite, damaged fins.

Causes: proliferation of opportunistic fungi following wounds or poor quality water.

Treatment: Isolate the affected fish; treat with antifungal products; keep the aquarium clean with regular water changes.

3. Oodinium (velvet or golden disease)

Symptoms: Gold or powdery coating on the skin; fish breathing with difficulty and remaining at the surface; fins clamped shut.

Causes: protozoan Oodinium pillularis , favored by cold water or poor hygiene.

Treatment: Turn off the lights for 2-3 days; use specific copper-based treatments or natural alternatives available in stores.

4. Dropsy

Symptoms: noticeable abdominal swelling; raised, pinecone-shaped scales; lethargy and difficulty swimming.

Causes: Internal bacterial infections or kidney dysfunction often related to poor diet or stress.

Treatment: Difficult-to-treat disease; isolate the fish and administer specific antibiotics; improve water quality and diet.

5. Fin rot

Symptoms: Frayed, discolored, and receding fins; sometimes accompanied by a loss of alertness.

Causes: Bacterial or fungal infections, often caused by poor water quality or fish-to-fish aggression.

Care: Keep water clean; treat with antibacterial or antifungal products available in stores.

6. Intestinal worms and internal parasites

Symptoms: sudden weight loss despite eating fish; white stringy stools; withdrawal from the group.

Causes: Intestinal worm or protozoan infestations.

Treatment: administration of medicated feed or specific anti-parasitic treatments.

Prevention: the best cure

  • Many diseases can be avoided with some simple precautions:
  • Perform regular water changes.
  • Maintain constant water temperature and chemical values.
  • Do not overload the aquarium with fish.
  • Provide a varied, quality diet.
  • Quarantine new specimens before adding them to the tank.
