Discover the Paracanthurus hepatus: the true "Dory" fish

Valerio Chiaradonna

If you've seen the movie Finding Nemo , you surely remember the friendly little blue fish with a short memory who accompanies Marlin on his adventure. That character is based on a real fish: the Paracanthurus hepatus , also known as the blue surgeonfish or palette surgeonfish .

But who really is this fascinating inhabitant of coral reefs?

Identikit of the “Dory” fish

  • Scientific name : Paracanthurus hepatus
  • Family : Acanthuridae (surgeonfish)
  • Size : up to 30 cm long
  • Colors : Deep blue body, a black brush-like spot running down the flanks, bright yellow tail

It is the only species of its genus ( Paracanthurus ), so truly unique in its kind.

Where does he live?

The dory fish inhabits the coral reefs of the Indo-Pacific , from the coasts of Africa to the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. It can be found between 2 and 40 meters deep , where it swims among corals and rocks, often in small schools.

The young take refuge among branching corals ( Pocillopora ) for protection from predators, while the adults prefer open spaces for swimming.

What does he eat?

Paracanthurus hepatus is an omnivorous fish.

  • When young it feeds mainly on plankton .
  • As an adult, it supplements its diet with algae and small organisms it finds on the reef.

This habit also makes it an important “gardener” of the coral reef, because it prevents algae from suffocating the corals.

How it reproduces

Reproduction occurs in the open sea: the fish release eggs and sperm directly into the water. The eggs are pelagic , meaning they float and are carried by currents until they hatch. The larvae, initially transparent, take on a bright blue color only as they grow.

Curiosity

  • It is called “surgeonfish” because it has a small, sharp blade on its caudal peduncle (near the tail), used to defend itself from predators.
  • In nature it can live over 10 years .
  • After the release of Finding Dory , its popularity exploded: many people started looking for it for the aquarium, but it is a difficult fish to keep and requires very large tanks.

The “Dory” fish in the aquarium

As fascinating as it is, it is not a fish for everyone:

  • Requires marine tanks of at least 400–500 litres .
  • It is susceptible to pests and diseases.
  • It must have plenty of room to swim and live rocks to shelter on.

For these reasons it is considered a fish suitable only for expert aquarists .

State of conservation

Today, the Paracanthurus hepatus is not at risk of extinction: the IUCN classifies it as "Least Concern." However, fishing for the aquarium trade has put pressure on some local populations. Captive breeding is increasingly encouraged to reduce the impact on coral reefs.

The Paracanthurus hepatus is more than just a cute cartoon character, but a true treasure of the tropical seas. With its vibrant colors and vital role in the ecosystem, it is one of the most fascinating coral reef fish.

The next time you hear about “Dory,” remember that behind that smile is an amazing creature, an ambassador for the underwater world.
