Exo Terra BioDrain Terrarium Draining Substrate is a natural, non-organic substrate that provides excellent terrarium drainage. It won't rot or decompose like other natural substrates. The optional BioDrain Terrarium Draining Mesh will keep the BioDrain Terrarium Draining Substrate separate from the decorative substrate on the top layer of the terrarium, preventing the different substrates from mixing and contaminating the water. The BioDrain Terrarium Draining Substrate will function as a biological filtration system. Clean terrarium water can then be circulated through waterfalls or drip plants. Use Bio Clean (formerly known as Biotize) to accelerate biological filtration.

How to install Bio Drain

An example of a layered substrate in the terrarium using Exo Terra Bio Drain Substrate and Bio Drain Mesh:

Place the natural terrarium on a flat surface and clean the waterproof bottom.

Thoroughly wash the Bio Drain terrarium drainage substrate and spread it evenly throughout the terrarium.

Create a water part by removing the substrate in the desired location.

Cover the terrarium's drainage substrate with Bio Drain Terrarium Mesh and separate the water section with moss, bark, or rocks...

Add a biological substrate such as planting soil to the terrestrial (soil) area.

Plant live plants, mosses, and ferns and cover the topsoil with leaf litter.

Living plants provide shelter, retain moisture, and produce nutrients for various organisms, but they also absorb ammonium and nitrates in the soil.

Add an aquatic substrate such as Turtle Pebbles or Riverbed Sand to the water section and top up with water.
