Ceratophrys is a genus of frogs in the Ceratophryidae family. They are also known as South American horned frogs and Pac-Man frogs due to their distinctive round shape and large mouth, reminiscent of the video game character Pac-Man. They are fossorial frogs, very easy to keep even in shallow terrariums of medium-small size. The Pac-Man frog is insectivorous, feeding primarily on cockroaches, crickets, and alligators. Larger frogs will also accept thawed mice. Being natural stalking predators, they spend most of their time in the substrate, leaving only their eyes exposed. Therefore, we must provide them with a suitable substrate, such as sphagnum peat moss or coconut fiber, in sufficient quantity to allow them to burrow and cover themselves. Obviously, the substrate must be kept moist, but not wet. A water bowl is not essential if we keep the substrate well moist, however, hornbills often enjoy basking in shallow water, so providing one is not a bad idea. Although Ceratophrys thrive in the wild at temperatures between 23°C and 29°C, in a terrarium it's best never to exceed 23-24°C. In the wild, they burrow into cool soil, but in a terrarium, due to their smaller size, the substrate cannot guarantee the same effect. It's also a good idea to include live plants.
