Enhance your habitat with the natural beauty and high-performance benefits of our Casuarina Pods. Derived from the Casuarina equisetifolia tree, these botanicals are perfect for adding visual interest and enrichment to your aquarium, paludarium, or terrarium.

Description
Our Casuarina pods come from the Casuarina equisetifolia tree, native to India, Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, French Polynesia, Fiji, and Vanuatu. The globular, conical fruit of the beach oak measures 10–24 mm in length and 9–13 mm in diameter and is sparsely pubescent or hairy. The fruit inside the cone is actually a samara, 6–8 mm long. These pods are known for their high tannin production.

Casuarina pods tend to decompose more slowly, making them an excellent choice for long-term enrichment. They gradually release beneficial tannins into the water, which can lower the pH of freshwater and turn it a beautiful brown. This process helps replicate natural conditions and improve the water chemistry in your habitat.

These botanicals also provide essential foraging opportunities for fish, shrimp, and other inhabitants, contributing to their overall health and well-being. Whether you're creating a new setup or enhancing an existing one, casuarina pods from the Casuarina equisetifolia tree offer the perfect blend of beauty and functionality, fostering a vibrant and thriving ecosystem.

Usage
1. Preparation
Rinse: Rinse all vegetables under running water to remove any dirt or debris.
First boil: Boil the vegetables for 10 minutes. This helps kill any pathogens and helps the vegetables sink faster. Discard this initial water, as it may contain contaminants and impurities.
Second boiling: add clean water and boil the vegetables again for another 10-20 minutes.
Waterlogging: If the vegetables still float, repeat the process until they are completely soaked and sink in the water.
Tannin-rich water: Once the water has cooled, you can use this tannin-rich water to condition the tank.

Important: Add tannin-rich water slowly and check water parameters frequently to avoid sudden drops in pH or other changes in water chemistry. This gradual introduction helps maintain a stable and healthy environment for your aquarium's inhabitants.

2. Introduction to the aquarium
Quantity: Start with a small number of plants and gradually increase the quantity to observe how your aquarium and its inhabitants react.
Placement: Place plants strategically around the aquarium to create hiding places and natural-looking environments. Avoid overcrowding.

3. Monitoring and maintenance
Water parameters: Monitor water parameters regularly, as plants can release tannins, which lower pH and soften the water. This can be helpful for some species, but adjustments may be necessary.
Decay: Plants will eventually decompose. Remove any decayed or moldy plants to prevent water quality problems.
Replanting: Replant plants as needed. Some may last a few weeks, while others may last several months.

4. Considerations
Species compatibility: Make sure the plants are suitable for the species in your aquarium. Some fish and invertebrates thrive in tannin-rich environments, while others do not.
Control the amount: Overuse can lead to excessive tannin release, making the water too acidic or dark for your preferences.

5. Advantages
Aesthetics: Botanicals create a more natural and visually pleasing environment.
Water quality: The release of tannins may have antibacterial and antifungal properties.
Habitat: Provides natural hiding places and breeding grounds for fish and invertebrates.
Behavior: Encourages natural behaviors such as foraging and breeding.

6. Important notes
Natural variation: This is a natural product that may differ slightly in color, shape, or size from the photo and item description.
Ornamental Use Only: Botanicals are intended for ornamental use only in aquariums, terrariums, and vivariums. They are not intended for human consumption at any time. Do not ingest!
