Natural Botanicals for Shrimp and Betta Fish
Helps replicate natural environments for Bettas, shrimp, and other aquarium inhabitants
Small size: 4-5 inches
Overview:
Catappa leaves from Indian almond trees (Terminalia catappa) help replicate natural environments for bettas, shrimp, and other aquarium inhabitants. When added to an aquarium, they release tannins and other organic compounds that help maintain a lower pH and gently color the water. These conditions mimic habitats with acidic water and abundant leaf litter. As the catappa leaves decay, beneficial microorganisms grow on the surface of the leaves, creating a natural food source for shrimp, snails, and newly hatched fish.
Directions:
Add 1-2 leaves per 20 liters (5 US gallons). Remove and replace monthly or as desired. Catappa leaves may float initially, but will sink after 2-3 days. To make an extract, boil 3 grams (about 2.5 leaves) in 1 liter (1 US quart) of water for 10 minutes, or until desired color is achieved. Allow the extract to cool to aquarium temperature and pour directly into the tank or mix with prepared water for water changes. When using the extract for the first time, add gradually over 2-3 days and monitor to ensure the pH remains within a suitable range for the tank's inhabitants. Chemical filtration media such as activated carbon can remove the compounds provided by catappa leaves.
