The cholla cactus is native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, the Sonoran Desert. The cholla is a tree-like plant with a low, branched trunk that grows up to 4 m (13 ft) tall. It grows in dense bushes that provide the perfect hiding place for many reptile species. Many species live around these bushes, seeking refuge when threatened by predators or simply to escape the hot desert sun. The skeleton, in particular, is an excellent hiding place for many reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates!
