The Exo Terra® Coconut Cave is the perfect nesting and egg-laying hideout for your poison dart frogs and various other amphibians, reptiles, and invertebrates. Its realistic appearance mimics a natural reptile and amphibian hideout and will add a tropical touch to your terrarium setup. In a consistently humid environment, its uneven surface will slowly become covered with moss, adding a natural look to the cave. Poison dart frogs are easily frightened and will hide rather quickly at the slightest disturbance to their surroundings. Oddly enough, poison dart frogs will emerge much more often if provided with large, secure hiding places, which will make them feel safe and secure knowing their comfort zone is within reach. An adequate hiding area is an essential feature of a natural terrarium. Without a safe place to hide and sleep, reptiles and amphibians will easily develop stress, which will affect their activity and appetite. In nature, poison dart frogs use all types of shelter to hide or lay their eggs: leaves, nut pods, coconut halves, hollow bamboo, rotting logs, etc. Unlike these natural hiding places or egg-laying sites, such as nut pods and coconut halves, the Coconut Cave will not deteriorate or rot and can be used for many years. The Exo Terra® Coconut Cave is the perfect size for most poison dart frogs, and thanks to the smooth surface of the bottom tray, poison dart frogs will readily accept the Coconut Cave as a breeding and egg-laying site. By positioning the Coconut Cave at a slight angle, the water will slope toward one side of the bottom tray, a necessary requirement for various poison dart frog species to lay their eggs. Furthermore, the smooth surface of the bottom tray allows for easy egg removal and thorough cleaning. Furthermore, because the coconut top can be easily removed without disturbing the eggs, it is ideal for monitoring them.

When used as a reptile hideout, add Exo Terra Forest Moss to create a slightly humid microclimate, ideal for reptiles to absorb moisture through their skin and lay their eggs.
