Description
Our Cotton Pods come from the Gossypium hirsutum tree, native to North and South America but widely cultivated. Known commercially as "cotton petals," these broken cotton pods feature boat-shaped segments that taper to a sharp point and are shiny on the inside. Measuring 1.5-3 cm long and 1-1.5 cm wide, these botanicals are ideal for creating a visually appealing and naturally enriched environment in your aquatic or terrestrial setups.
Cotton Pods provide essential enrichment for your habitat's inhabitants, encouraging natural behaviors and interactions. The unique structure and composition of these pods make them a versatile addition to any setup. They gradually release beneficial tannins into the water, improving water chemistry and replicating natural conditions. These botanicals also provide hiding places and foraging opportunities for fish, shrimp, and other inhabitants, contributing to their overall health and well-being.
Whether you want to create a new setup or enhance an existing one, Gossypium hirsutum Cotton Pods offer the perfect mix of beauty and functionality, fostering a vibrant, thriving ecosystem.

Usage
1. Preparation
-
Rinse: Rinse all botanicals under running water to remove any dirt or debris.
-
First Boil: Boil the botanicals for 10 minutes. This helps to kill any potential pathogens and helps the botanicals to sink faster. Discard this first batch of water, as it may contain contaminants and impurities.
-
Second Boil: Add clean water and boil the botanicals again for an additional 10-20 minutes.
-
Waterlogging: If the botanicals still float, repeat the process until they are fully waterlogged and sink in the water.
-
Tannin-Rich Water: Once the water has cooled down, you can use this tannin-rich water to condition your tank.
Important: Add the tannin-rich water slowly and check the water parameters frequently to avoid any sudden drops in pH or other changes in water chemistry. This gradual introduction helps to maintain a stable and healthy environment for your aquarium inhabitants.
2. Introduction to the Aquarium
-
Quantity: Start with a small number of botanicals and gradually increase the amount to observe how your aquarium and its inhabitants respond.
-
Placement: Place the botanicals strategically around the aquarium to create hiding spots and natural-looking environments. Avoid overcrowding.
3. Monitoring and Maintenance
-
Water Parameters: Monitor the water parameters regularly, as botanicals can release tannins, which lower the pH and soften the water. This can be beneficial for certain species, but adjustments may be needed.
-
Decomposition: Botanicals will eventually break down. Remove any decomposed or moldy botanicals to prevent water quality issues.
-
Replacement: Replace botanicals as needed. Some might last a few weeks, while others may last several months.
4. Considerations
-
Species Compatibility: Ensure the botanicals are suitable for the species in your aquarium. Some fish and invertebrates thrive in tannin-rich environments, while others do not.
-
Quantity Control: Overuse can lead to excessive tannin release, making the water too acidic or dark for your preference.
5. Benefits
-
Aesthetic: Botanicals create a more natural and visually appealing environment.
-
Water Quality: The release of tannins can have antibacterial and antifungal properties.
-
Habitat: Provides natural hiding spots and breeding grounds for fish and invertebrates.
-
Behavior: Encourages natural behaviors such as foraging and breeding.
6. Important Notes
-
Natural Variation: This is a natural product that may differ slightly in color, shape, or size from the photo and item description.
-
Ornamental Use Only: Botanicals are intended for ornamental use only in aquariums, terrariums, and vivariums. They are not intended for human consumption at any time. Don't ingest!
