Exo Terra Sub Stratum is harvested from the mineral-rich hills of the Aso Volcano in Japan. This natural volcanic soil, composed of andesitic and rhyolitic tephra, is very nutrient-rich and ideal for lush plant growth in bioactive planted terrariums. The porous surface allows for excellent drainage and aeration, supporting strong root growth. The loose, low-density structure of the Sub Stratum promotes a thriving population of beneficial, nitrifying bacteria, creating a self-sustaining, living terrarium ecosystem. The active, beneficial soil bacteria will break down biological waste, keeping the terrarium clean and healthy.

Single Substrate: When using Exo Terra Sub Stratum as the sole substrate, add a 1–2″ (2.5–5 cm) layer to the terrarium. Live bacteria will activate when the substrate comes into contact with water or waste. Organic matter such as leftover food and animal waste will decompose over time. The absorbent properties of volcanic ash will eliminate odors by trapping decomposed materials. Rinse Sub Stratum and partially replace it every 12 months.

Drainage Layer: Add a top layer of organic substrate to the Exo Terra Sub Stratum for optimal bioactivity and drainage. Plants can be anchored in the top layer (e.g., Exo Terra Plantation Soil) while their roots thrive in the lower Sub Stratum, resulting in optimal growth. Additionally, you can add an inorganic layer first for even better drainage (Exo Terra BioDrain) to allow excess water to flow through the substrate, preventing saturation and the anaerobic bacteria from competing with the beneficial bacteria in the Sub Stratum. Use the BioDrain mesh to separate the BioDrain layer from the organic matter to penetrate the underlying layer. Use a top layer of leaf litter to provide dry areas, shelter, and living surfaces for all organisms in the terrarium. This will also prevent evaporation from the underlying layers.

Secretly blended to grow healthy plants, it starts with the soil. Healthy soil naturally contains living microorganisms, from bacteria to fungi, protozoa, and arthropods. Together, they form a choreographed exchange, from nutrient recycling to the decomposition of organic matter.

By mixing Sub Stratum with other organic substrates, you enrich any substrate with essential minerals such as calcium, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. It also improves water retention and provides adequate aeration for the roots.
